Awesome. I love, love the progression of John's character--from the confused, tormented man who just lost his wife, to the rookie hunter, to the neglectful yet somehow attentive father, to the hardened hunter. I've never seen the change in John written so well before! A few things stuck out to me the most:
“They had mandatory teacher conferences last night, Dad. It’s not a big deal, you know, I’ve been going since he started high school.” LOVE that concept--I've actually scribbled down something about Dean going to Sam's Parent-Teacher meetings. I can see it happening, and it’s just one of those details that Dean would see to because it’s important to Sam.
"If Sam looks more and more betrayed and Dean more and more tired, it’s fine with him, because it keeps his boys alive and safe. It’s fine with him." Gorgeous, truthful sentence. And the repetition of it being "fine" with John was a nice touch to show how NOT fine it is--he's just trying to do what's right to keep his sons safe. It's what he's always done, and it's where his biggest fault lies nine times out of ten.
Also liked—in a heartbroken way—how John missed all of the firsts for Dean and Sam. He sacrificed so much of his relationship with his sons, but again he’s doing it because in his mind there is no other choice.
